IWF Finland - 10th Anniversary in Helsinki - 12 to 13 June 2026

IWF Ireland was warmly represented by our past president, Fiona Tierney, and myself at IWF Finland’s wonderful 10th anniversary celebration in Helsinki.

From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with great generosity, warmth and friendship by our Finnish hosts. The event was hosted by Paula Kilpinen, President of IWF Finland and Board Chair, with Marita Markkula as lead organiser. Many of us will remember Marita as one of the key organisers of the highly successful IWF 2023 Cornerstone event, and this anniversary gathering carried forward that same spirit of thoughtful connection and “Designing with Purpose.”

The gala dinner was a very special occasion, with a keynote address from Kimberly Cooper-Jaqua, IWF Global Board Chair. It was inspiring to hear updates and reflections from IWF guests from the US, UK, Sweden, France, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Northern Italy, Germany, and emerging groups from Estonia. The celebration continued late into the evening at the Bourse Club, where members had the chance to connect, share stories and celebrate together.

On Saturday, we were treated to a memorable “Behind the Scenes” visit to Finland’s National Opera and Ballet. It is an exceptional facility, and it was fascinating to see the extraordinary logistics involved in running a combined repertoire of ballet and opera, while also hosting visiting performers. We explored everything from costumes, jewellery and scenery to the management of more than 500 creatives, as well as the Ballet School. The visit sparked thoughtful conversations about the role of the arts in Finnish society and the constant need for fundraising — a theme that will no doubt resonate with many IWF Ireland members who are leaders in the arts.

We then made our way around Helsinki’s central area to explore the work of three internationally recognised female designers. First was Marimekko, Finland’s globally iconic design brand, celebrated for its bold prints and joyful optimism. For Irish members, there are lovely parallels with Orla Kiely’s work across clothing, homeware and beyond. Next was Kalevala Koru, founded in 1939, where 33% of Kalevala Jewelry profits are used for charity projects and staff well-being. Their second-hand section also brought their sustainability mission beautifully to life. Our final designer visit was to Andiata, the Finnish fashion brand.

Our Italian IWF members completely outshone the local staff, styling and encouraging several members to leave with beautiful new clothes — all modelled, coordinated and enjoyed with great humour. Our final dinner took place in the charming and historic Annala Villa, a community-run villa and park close to Helsinki’s original town site. It was a fitting end to a very special visit. Smaller international events like this offer a wonderful opportunity to really get to know new friends.

The Finnish Forum has 110 members and runs around 20 events each year. They have retained many of their founding members while welcoming five to ten new members annually. There is a genuine open door for any IWF member travelling to Finland to connect and enjoy a coffee. From my own experience, I can assure you that they will extend a warm and very happy hand of friendship.
